Truman Trumpet Showcase

The Truman State University Department of Music is pleased to announce the Truman Trumpet Showcase on Monday, May 1 at 6:00 p.m. in the Ophelia Parrish Performance Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

Earlier in the semester, Trumpet Studio students had an opportunity to audition for the solo performances that will be featured during the concert. Five performers were chosen to be featured during the first half of the concert. Hannah Weibert, along with Dr. Byunghee Yoo on piano, will perform “Sonatina for Trumpet and Piano” by Carl Alexius. Sarah Wilson will perform “Pavane pour une infant défunte” by Maurice Ravel, also with Dr. Yoo. Dr. Michael Bunchman, piano, will join Nick Wollenberg, Justin Schaedler, and Alex Sutton on sonatas by Halsey Stevens, Eric Ewazen, and Paul Hindemith.

The second half of the concert will feature the Truman Trumpet Ensemble performing pieces by Benjamin Britten and Kim André Arnesen, along with an arrangement of the well-known Die Bänkelsängerlieder by Joseph Pappas. Arnesen ‘s “Even When He is Silent,” written in 2011, is a hauntingly beautiful piece originally composed for four-part female a cappella choir based on a text scratched onto a prison wall during the Holocaust:

I believe in the sun
Even when it’s not shining;
I believe in love,
Even when I feel it not;
I believe in God
Even when He is silent.
