Solar Eclipse Workshop

The total solar eclipse occurring on the 21st of August 2017 promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to engage students, faculty, and the general public in topics related to astronomy and science. The eclipse path cuts diagonally across Missouri, and Kirksville will witness about 98.5% obscuration of the Sun by our Moon. The aims of this workshop are:
a) Provide an overview of the planned events, and invite ideas and suggestions to successfully implement them,
b) Provide hands-on experience with SAFELY using solar telescopes, and solar binoculars,
c) Provide an overview of freely available resources on the internet,
d) Provide an overview of the geometry of the Sun-Earth-Moon system which leads to several interesting phenomena such as tidal locking, phases of the Moon, and lunar & solar eclipses and,
e) Provide an opportunity for interested individuals and groups to interact and establish contacts to help strengthen STEAM related efforts in and around Kirksville.
