Celebrate the 150th year of the University with a back-to-campus experience! The campus visit will include a tour, lunch in a college cafeteria and meeting students on campus! Let us do the driving and catch a ride with the group in a van. The van ride will begin in Des Moines with pick ups in Pella and Ottumwa.
Schedule:
7:30 a.m.: Depart Des Moines (Meredith Drive Reformed Church, 5128 Meredith Drive)
8:30 a.m.: Pick up in Pella (Fareway parking lot)
9:45 a.m.: Pick up in Ottumwa (Kohl’s Dept Store parking lot, back portion)
11:15 a.m.: Arrive on campus
11:30 a.m.:Lunch on campus
12:45 p.m.: Tour begins at north doors of Kirk Building
3:15 p.m.: Bookstore
4 p.m.: Depart Kirksville
5:30 p.m.: Drop off in Ottumwa
6:30 p.m.: Drop off in Pella
7:30 p.m.: Final Destination Des Moines
The cost is $25 for Chapter members and $30 for non-members. If you aren’t a member, join now for the discount! All alumni and friends who want to ride in the van MUST pre-pay online. Lunch in a campus dormitory is included in the cost of a van ride. The dining halls offer a wide variety of choices including a super salad bar, gluten-free options, desserts and more! The guided tour of campus is free. A free T-shirt will be given to all guided tour participants. Alumni are also welcome to drive their own vehicles as well as eat lunch on their own if they have a favorite place in Kirksville. They still must register online for the tour to get a T-shirt.
The tour of campus will focus on the early history of the University as well as the physical growth of the campus. It is primarily story driven, using examples from our past to highlight different themes. The tour guide, Zac Burden, is also hoping alumni will share their stories so he can continue to build his narrative.
Burden is a 2003 Truman graduate with a degree in history. As an undergraduate he got very curious about Truman’s history and began playing around with the archives to learn more. As a Student Advisor (SA), he shares Truman history with students. After graduation, he enrolled in the Master of Arts in Education program while working full time as the Missouri Hall director. He completed the MAE in 2009 and is finishing his 13th year now as the Missouri Hall director. He continues to dabble in the local history and works to educate students on Truman’s heritage.
