Gold Medal Concert

The Truman State University Department of Music is pleased to announce a Gold Medal Concert on Saturday, March 4 at 8:00 p.m. in the Ophelia Parrish Performance Hall. Directed by Dr. Sam McClure, the Symphony Orchestra will be joined by student soloists Darby Dachroeden, piano, Kaylee Hershberger, piano, and Donald Rabin, flute. A $5 dollar donation is suggested for admission.

The concert will open with “Rosamunde Overture D.644” by Franz Schubert, followed by Piano Concerto No. 3 Op. 50 by Dmitiri Kabalevsky, “Piano Concerto in G” by Maurice Ravel and “Concertino for Flute and Orchestra Op. 107” by Cecile Chaminade. The final two performances of the evening will be “Pohjola’s Daughter Op. 49” by Jean Sibelius followed by “Suite from The Firebird” by Igor Stravinsky.

Kaylee Hershberger is a junior piano performance major from Kalona, Iowa. In high school, Kaylee was a piano student of Truman alumna Susan See. While studying with Mrs. See, Kaylee was selected by competitive audition to receive the Truman Piano Fellowship, a four-year full tuition award that was first started in 1984 by President Emeritus, Dr. Charles McClain. At Truman, she studies piano with Dr. David McKamie. While at Truman, Kaylee has performed in piano master classes conducted by Professor Giuseppe Bruno (Director of the “Giaccomo Puccini” Conservatory in La Spezia, Italy) and Professor Lisa Yui (Piano Faculty at the Manhattan School of Music). During her undergraduate studies, Kaylee has served as accompanist with Voci della Tempeste (Women’s Chamber Choir), New Music Ensemble, and a plethora of students. In her spare time, Kaylee enjoys helping out with worship at her home church, teaching piano lessons to area youth, and spending time with friends and family.

Donald Rabin is a sophomore Flute Performance Major at Truman State University. Donald has been a member of the All-Suburban Honor Band, All-State Honor Band, All-National Band, Bi-State Honor Band, Webster’s Young People’s Symphonic Orchestra, the Saint Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra, All-Collegiate Orchestra, and is currently Principal Flute of the Truman State Wind Symphony I, Truman State Symphonic Orchestra, Truman State Flute Quartet, the Truman State Woodwind Choir, and the New Music Ensemble “Uncommon Practice”. He has been selected to play in master classes by Dr. Paul Thompson, Mr. Demarre McGill, Ms. Bonita Boyd, Ms. Alexa Still. He has also won 2nd place at the Flute Society of Saint Louis Young Artist Competition, selected as a winner of the Gold Medal Concerto Competition, Wind Symphony Concerto Competition, and has participated in the Aria Music Festival, and Oberlin Flute Intensive Workshop. Donald has studied with Mark Sparks, Jennifer Nitchman, Jan Smith, Dr. Shelly Monier, Dr. Aurelia Hartenberger, and his current teacher Dr. Julianna Moore.
