Folklore Colloquium: “What Does a Lesbian Puppet Show Have to do with Folklore?”

Dr. Summer Pennell will discuss her folkloric research on Indonesian shadow-puppet theater, called wayang kulit, and Indonesian music, which is played in an ensemble called a gamelan. Dr. Pennell earned her Master’s degree in Folklore from the University of Oregon, and her thesis was a performance of an original wayang kulit play which adapted an Indonesian folktale by adding a lesbian protagonist. She will discuss the cultural tradition of wayang kulit in Indonesia, queer people’s experience in Indonesia including her fieldwork on the island of Bali, and share images of her performance.
