Fighting in the Shade: Greek Hoplite Warfare in the Persian Wars

The Truman State University Department of Classical and Modern Languages, in partnership with Interdisciplinary Studies, is pleased to announce the interactive presentation of “Fighting in the Shade: Greek Hoplite Warfare in the Persian Wars” on Wednesday, November 2 at 6:30 p.m. in the “Down Under” of the Student Union Building. All are invited and welcome to come see history relived.

Gamal Castile, a Greek hoplite reenactor, gives a very lively and interactive presentation on Ancient Greek and Persian military tactics – complete with authentically recreated weapons and armor, designed and constructed by the presenter himself. The scope of this presentation concerns the evolution of the Greek hoplite: how their weapons and battle tactics culminated in the victory over the Persian invasions of Greece (c. 499-449 BCE), allowing for the development and flourishing of Greek culture in the Classical Period. The audience has the opportunity to participate in the presentation utilizing resources provided by Castile who is an enthusiast of the Classics in his free time; Mr. Castile is an officer with the Columbia Police Department as part of its Community Outreach Unit.
